I have currently turned on the formatting marks (dots for spaces, arrows for tabs, paragraph marks, etc.). Toggle visibility of non-printing symbols by clicking the ¶ button on the Home ribbon (or pressing Ctrl-Shift-8 (Windows) or Command-8 (Mac)). It should now hold for any future updates of that field. I have Word for Mac 2011, version 14.4.5.
